Dub Selekta Podcast 5.0: Mochipet (PETNATION edition)

We’re super stoked to be throwing down this special PETNATION edition mix as part of our Dub Selekta Podcast series. If you’ve been paying attention to our facebook fanpage then you’ll have seen it blowing up with lots to do in relation to the newly resurected monthly in San Francisco that we’re very proud to be apart of; PETNATION.

The first round of PETNATION started out as a series of underground warehouse parties headed by San Fran’s Mochipet. After a brief hiatus, and some time moving from the underground warehouse scene to the more legit venues, PETNATION has been resurrected with a special Hallowe’en party on Oct 30th at Public Works. Headlining the night is one of our faves, Mark Instinct, as he plays alongside Mochipet and DCarls with local residents Slayers Club, Skulltrane, Free Krush, Question, Octopod, Taso and Supplying Demand. To coincide with the newly relaunched monthly, we’ve teamed up with Mochipet and the Daly City Records crew to bring you a special edition podcast rinsing out tunes by artists lined up on the bill!

If you’re not in the San Fran area and won’t be able to make it out to the party, thats ok! We’re all about exposing new and exciting artists here at Dub Selekta so checkout the mix and discover some new tunes or relish in some favourites!

In addition to this new mix, Mochipet also just dropped a new mashup/remix album, 10 Reasons to Love Hate Dubstep, that he’s offered up as a free download. Check out this link for an album of remixes that range from Hip-Hop to Hipster to straight up well.. Def Leppard! Between the stacked tracklisting and the sweet album artwork, this album is worth a peek.

Big Up Magazine Review: Mochipet- 10 Reasons to Love Hate Dubstep

Ok guys, don’t be fooled. This is not even dubstep. Most of it anyways. And it’s not even a 10-track album. Better yet, it’s a compilation of 16 remixes/mashups by Mochipet, whose mind we’re not gonna even try to figure out. But the point is: it is new, it is free, and it has a 420 song on it. The rest of it, you’re definitely gonna either love or hate. Mochipetain’t no half-stepping!

MARK INSTINCT (Rottun Recordings | Canada)

A purveyor of fierce, penetrating beats and filthy basslines, Mark Instinct is one bad muthafucka – literally. With roots in metal, hip hop, punk and drum and bass there is no sound off limits for this young producer from Calgary who’s firmly secured himself amongst some of dubstep and drum and bass’s elite. Known for his explosive stage performance and his suave nature behind the decks, you can be sure that Mark Instinct will have your dancefloor poppin. With 2011 appearances at Starscape and Shambhala, and a Australian/US Tour already under his belt, you can be sure Mark Instinct has carved a solid name in the bass game.

This past year Mark’s first EP, Get Loud, was dropped on Rottun Records and featured 5 weighty tracks that have all gotten major playback with everyone from Excision to Bare rinsing them. Currently working on EP releases for both Rottun Recordings and Subhuman Recordings, you can be sure that Mark’s next release will be showing up on Beatport’s Top 100 chart, where he’s had numerous other releases land. In addition to his upcoming releases watch for forthcoming collaborations featuring the likes of Armani Reign, Messinian and Death by Stereo’s Efrem Shulz.

DCARLS (Simplify|Baltimore)
DCarls is coming with the HEAT from Baltimore, Maryland. This talented Glitch and Dubstep producer has his second EP release on Simplifly Recordings title “Flavorhythm 2″. DCarls does not hold back on ”The Heat” in this roller coaster tune with the twists, turns, and screwing bass drops in this a hand crafted masterpiece.

There is no question as to why his tracks are flying up Beatport’s charts. Able to muscle basslines around with the best of them, his compositional and theoretical background in piano and guitar make this stuff look easy, but the intricacy and precision are unbelievable. With an infectious, heavy metal riff and pulsing drums that break down into drum & bass with great regularity, “Splash” is about as subtle as a sledgehammer.
There is no question, not a shred of doubt that this kid is a superstar waiting to break out… and we can’t wait to say “we told you so.”

Groovemine.com Review: Chicxulub by Mochipet

I like albums with audacious concepts. Often, though, the music itself is boring, the concept simply serving as a crutch. When I first heard the newest offering by Mochipet (Taiwan-born David Wang), I had no idea that it was a concept album — and I liked it. My point being that good concept albums don’t ever live in the shadow of their concepts: the music is simply enriched by an understanding of the artist’s singular intentions. And in this case, they’re quite singular: Chicxulub, as the press release states, “is the soundtrack for an animated novel in which the Dinosaurs make their way through the impact of the comet believed to have destroyed them.”

Chronology is kind of a funny thing. If I had read that ridiculous description before my maiden voyage with the album, the music would definitely have disappointed me. The bombastic concept would have completely drowned out the music, I’m sure. But because I read it after listening to the album, everything instead clicked into place, and all of the elements of the music that I liked made more sense, giving the album a level of narrative depth of which I was previously unaware, appreciative as I was of the record’s epic synth textures. Suddenly the album’s scope, its plodding glitch-hop and huge synths, became panoramic.

NYsh-Noise You Should Hear: Mochipet wants to be a BOSS

This Kid from Taiwan doesn’t look like hes more than Sixteen years old. Just cause hes young doesn’t mean that he cant hang with the big boys. His sound is just about as unique as it comes. This song really shows that he is absolutely stepping up his game. I would not be surprised if you start seeing this dude around a lot more. Make sure you listen to the mix he just dropped also. Its like nothing I have ever heard before.

Control Freq Radio Feature on Mochipet + Free Download!

Born in Taiwan R.O.C. to Rocket Scientist father and Kindergarten Teacher mother, David Wang (a.k.a.Mochipet) has been tinkering with electronics since he was a child. However, not until he added music to the equation, did something special begin to take shape. Having grown up listening to metal guitar, avant-garde jazz, and mainstream hip-hop, David’s eclectic taste can now be seen in his music – ever changing, and always evolving.

His fervency for diversity can also be noted in the mixed bag of his many artist collaborations which include the likes of legendary skateboarder Ray Barbee (Powell Peralta), Techo producer Ellen Allien (Berlin), hip-hop MCs Mikah9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Casual (Hieroglyphics), and Raashan Ahmad (Crown City Rockers), electro Miami gangster Otto Von Schirach , booty bass rockstars 215 The Freshest Kids and Spank Rock (BigDada), mashup glitch tweeker Kid606 (Tigerbeat6), Edwardian suit-wearing Daedelus (Ninjatune), glitch popstars Jahcoozi (Kitty-Yo), and avant-garde jazz legend Weasel Walter (Flying Luttenbachers)…

I guess I’d like to put some of the tracks into a realm somewhere between Pretty Lights, Emancipator and The Glitch Mob? XLR8R -Mochipet “Yoshi’s Dinosaur Egg Hunt”

The purple-dinosaur-suit-wearing producer known as Mochipet is a week away from releasing his latest LP, Chicxulub (artwork above), for the 1320 label. Here, we have the record’s first single, an energetic slice of epic beat work that matches videogame-style arpeggiators (check the title) along with an over-powering breakbeat and a healthy dose of low-end rumble. Considering “Yoshi’s Dinosaur Egg Hunt” is only the second track of the album, which is said to serve as “the soundtrack for an animated novel in which the dinosaurs make their way through the impact of the comet believed to have destroyed them,” it’s safe to say that Chicxulub is going to be one propulsive collection of boom-bappery when it drops August 16.
